Jean-Michel Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist who rose from the streets of New York City to become one of the most influential and celebrated painters of the 20th century. Beginning his career as the graffiti artist SAMO© in the late 1970s, Basquiat quickly transitioned from spray-painting cryptic aphorisms on Manhattan buildings to creating powerful works on canvas that commanded international attention.
Basquiat's distinctive Neo-Expressionist style combined seemingly chaotic imagery with profound social commentary, incorporating text, symbols, and figures that addressed themes of racism, colonialism, and class struggle. His work drew from a wide range of influences including African and Caribbean heritage, jazz music, Gray's Anatomy, and the urban landscape of New York. With a visual vocabulary featuring crown motifs, skeletal figures, and fragmented words, Basquiat created a unique artistic language that bridged high art and street culture.
Despite his tragically short life, Basquiat's impact on contemporary art remains immeasurable. He was the youngest artist to exhibit at Documenta in Kassel, collaborated with Andy Warhol, and became a cultural icon whose influence extends far beyond the art world into fashion, music, and popular culture. His work continues to break auction records and inspire new generations of artists. The Wynwood Walls Shop celebrates Basquiat's enduring legacy through officially licensed merchandise that brings his iconic imagery to collectors and admirers worldwide, connecting Miami's vibrant street art scene with one of its greatest pioneers.
