Ron English (b. 1959, Decatur, Illinois) is an American contemporary artist widely considered the Godfather of Street Art. He earned a BFA from the University of North Texas and an MFA from the University of Texas before moving to New York City. English first gained fame in the early 1980s by surreptitiously reworking billboards to critique American consumer culture, risking arrest in the process. He coined the term "POPaganda" to describe his blending of high and low cultural touchstones, a practice that spans fine art, vinyl toys, political murals, and commercial design. His paintings rework art-historical masterpieces including Picasso's Guernica, da Vinci's Last Supper, and van Gogh's Starry Night. English has designed album artwork for the Dandy Warhols, Slash, and Chris Brown, and is the subject of Pedro Carvajal's documentary "POPaganda: The Art and Crimes of Ron English."
